When a class ends at 10:50, and the time on the clock is 10:50, do NOT raise your hand to ask a question. It's over. We have class again another day. Or ask the professor later. This particular professor does a great job at ending class on time. Do not make it difficult, people.
I'm going to start bringing things to throw at people...

Spring Has Sprung
We haven't had much winter this year (not complaining, just confused), so I've felt like we were in a perpetual spring of sorts. But it turns out I was wrong. Real spring has arrived, and lo, it is awesome.
New York City has the best spring and fall. Right outside my window is a tree with tiny green leaves sprouting. So, so cute. And the trees all over the city are covered in blossoms, and little flowers are coming up in flower beds, and all is right with the world.

Who's There?
This week, I opened my locker at school to discover something...different...
There are little seeds/nuts/something scattered around inside.
What happened? Does someone crazy who thinks this is funny have my locker combination?
I tell you, if I have mice at school, I may lose my mind.
Not that there's much left to lose, but really, I need all that I can get for now.

Wrong, Wrong, Wrong
This is just wrong. Wrong on so many levels. I am not amused.

Wrong Solution
I keep thinking I need to get some new clothes to add to my wardrobe for my summer job. You know, step up my professional game. Not that my casual game is really going that great, but I figure it's important to look good at work.
What have I accomplished so far? Well, I have purchased a couple of pairs of shoes.
Neat, but although the shoes will be helpful, that's just not going to solve the entire problem.
I need someone to come shopping with me. Why do you all live so far away? You know I'm helpless.

Random Thoughts of a Random Week
Now that I'm a poor student, I don't have great medical care. When I get sick, or have something I'm curious about, I spend a lot of time on the internet in the name of self diagnosis. There are all kinds of tools on the internet where select your symptoms from a list, and it gives you some likely diagnoses. Today, I chose "sensation of something in the eye." One possible diagnosis? "Foreign body in the eye." Thanks, internet. Never could have thought about that without you.
After a great deal of searching, I found some special cookies at the grocery store today. I flipped the box over to check the nutrition facts (not sure why, as I knew they were cookies and, therefore, not good for me). There are 8 servings per box. There are 5 cookies in the box. I just don't understand this. To make things even more complex, the cookies are triangles. I just don't know what to do with that.
Today, when I tried to type "sua sponte" on my phone, it auto corrected to "sue sponge." Not the same thing, iPhone.
It was 71 here today. I guess we're just not going to have winter. Whatever. I'll put my sweaters back in their boxes.
Yesterday, I saw a giant rat on the subway tracks. I had three thoughts. 1: Nice - that is a BIG one! 2: I'm impressed - it's rush hour! and 3: I'm so glad I only had mice, not rats. BLECH!
Today on my walk to the subway, I almost kicked a pigeon. It was unintentional, but now that I know they can recognize faces, I'm a bit apprehensive.
I spend so much time in New Jersey these days that sometimes, I think I should move there. Then I laugh and remember that it's New Jersey. (Disclaimer: there are lovely parts of New Jersey. The places I go are not in the lovely parts.)
In one of my classes today, we were discussing exhaustion. I am an expert in exhaustion, but not the legal kind, just the actual, I-need-a-nap kind.
And on that note, I'm going to go to sleep now, so that tomorrow, I can make sure I really learned what the professor wanted me to learn about exhaustion.

Things I Can't Say
I have some pronunciation issues lately. It all goes right in my head, but when I open my mouth, well, something happens. I'm chalking up to lack of sleep right now, but seriously, what's wrong with me?
Things I'm struggling to say:
Things I'm struggling to say:
- Reasonably segregable
- Remuneration
- Non-remunerative
These are things I say (or need to say) at least once a day each. I am rapidly approaching situations where I need to say all of them without tripping over my tongue.
And people wonder why I don't have good second-language skills...I can barely speak the words of my first language!
Actually, I've decided that the law is my second language. English is my first. I speak neither very eloquently, but that doesn't stop me from trying.

Contemplation and Heroes
Today was an interesting day. It's my sister's 30th birthday today. I spent much of the weekend thinking about it, wishing she were closer so I could tease her about turning 30 and how old she is getting. Of course, I am not too far from 30 myself, but you know...it's a sister's job to tease in these times.
Anyway, my sister's birthday had been on my mind this morning as I went to the subway. Today was a very ordinary day. I had to stop to refill my subway pass (I usually have an unlimited pass, but there have been all kinds of snafus with my pass recently, and I'm in limbo waiting for a new one). After I put more money on my pass, I headed down to the basement of the station where I could get the express train.
I took my usual spot in the station, where I could get in my usual car, and head to my usual Monday. Just to my right was a musician, as there is about 75% of the time for this part of my commute. Just as I stood in my place, I heard a woman scream. I've never heard a scream quite like it in real life before. The musician next to me, who had a drum and some other things, just ran. He just ran toward the screaming woman. I was near the middle of the platform, and the screaming was coming from the front. After a moment, the woman was screaming words, as were others. They began screaming that there was a man on the tracks. Someone raced up the stairs to find a station agent to tell them to stop the train that was maybe 60 seconds away from the station at that point. I looked, and the train wasn't visible yet. The man with the drum reached the end of the station, set down his drum, and jumped onto the subway tracks. Subway tracks are much, much deeper in the ground than they look, so I began to panic that they might both be trapped down there, both the original man on the tracks, and now his rescuer. The rescuer climbed over the third rail, retrieved the little man from between the two subway tracks (one each direction), and boosted him back onto the platform. Then, the rescuer pulled himself back onto the platform. At this point, someone had alerted the incoming train of the situation, and the train just stopped mostly out of the platform, waiting for the all clear. The rescuer and the man he rescued approached where I was standing. The man he had rescued looked very small to me while he was on the tracks, but I figured it was just because the tracks were deep. But really, it was a very small man. A very old, small man, who walked with a cane. The small, old man embraced the Good Samaritan, and they both began to cry together. The old man then proceeded up the stairs, aided by others, while the Good Samaritan paused and began quietly sobbing. The rest of the people on the platform began crying as well, and as the train pulled into the station, people hugged the hero and wished God's blessings upon him.
Then, the train doors opened, and we got on.
Several people got on in the same spot with me, and we talked about what had happened.
I may share more later about other thoughts about this story, but today, I shared the subway platform with an extraordinary man. A man who runs toward someone screaming. A man who jumps onto subway tracks without a second thought. A man who gave no regard for who the person on the tracks was or how he got to be there. And then that man went back to his usual job of singing and playing music, hoping to make a living during the morning commute.
I think my sister would like that I spent her birthday with a hero.

Pyramid - Round 3!!
Here we go, folks.
You remember how it goes. I tell you three things, and you tell me what they are. We've had "Things that Are Gross," and "Things with Mice."
Let's play Pyramid!
The subway platform at Union Square
David Letterman's front teeth
My comprehension of substantive due process jurisprudence
Guess away!

Not A Problem
I think someone might be reverse pick-pocketting me. I keep finding money in my back pockets that I feel pretty confident isn't mine.
I did find some after going to New Jersey...from what I've heard about New Jersey, I wouldn't expect people to be putting money INTO my pockets, but it could have happened.
It's not a problem, but all the same, it's weird.
Are people on the subway just sneaking money into my pockets to see how long it takes me to notice?
(Apparently, it takes me a while to notice. I always seem to notice in mornings before I've gone anywhere.)

Things I Can't Explain
Today, I got a TON of compliments on my new haircut. (Note: this is the third day everyone has seen my new haircut here, but yesterday, I guess it was pulled up, so I'm cutting them some slack.) Everyone talked about how lovely it looked and how wonderful I was looking today.
Then, I got home and decided I looked like a disaster.
Apparently, I look best when I look rushed and ill-kempt.
Why do I even bother??

Just to Clarify
On my vacation, my sister had to fill out three versions of a long form for something. I asked if she wanted help. She said no, that I had bad handwriting.
Harsh.
Then, as I was typing away on something else, I said that Somebody's Mother makes fun of my typing (hard to describe; you'll just have to ask her why it's funny) and she (LL) makes fun of my handwriting.
Then LL clarified that she makes fun of my typing as well as my handwriting.
Awesome. Thanks.

And So It Goes...
Here we are, just days before school begins again. I'm just finishing up my holiday trek across my favorite parts of the country, and it's almost time to be back in class.
For the past couple of weeks, people have been emailing me to set things up during the first week of school. Little by little, my schedule became a nightmare. Then my poor visiting teacher asked if she could come over. Uh, nope. Sorry. I recognize that it's the first week of school, but somehow, I'm already busy every day this week.
I'll try to be a better blogger this semester, but I can make no guarantees. Don't worry too much though; nothing super interesting has been happening. I get up, I go to school, I come home (sometimes very late), I eat dinner, I go to sleep, and then I start it all over again. If I'm lucky, I get a good night of sleep.
I haven't been very lucky lately.

Pyramid Part 2
Are you ready??
Let's play....PYRAMID!
Here's the list. Your job (as always) determine what the list is. So the last list included the bottom of my backpack, the bathrooms at Grand Central Terminal, and my wages before taxes; the answer was "things that are gross."
So here we go:
A computer
Disneyland
My kitchen/living room
Head to the comments and start your guessing!

New Year
A couple of weeks ago, I was writing out a check. As I wrote the date, I was about to write 2011 as the year, and then I thought, wait, it's not quite 2011 yet.
Wrong. It wasn't quite 2012 yet, but it had been 2011 for a while.
Apparently, I've just blocked out most of 2011.
Oh well. On to 2012!!

Half Time!
Well, folks, I just finished semester three of a six semester law degree. Half way done! WOW! Time sure flies when...wait, no...time hasn't necessarily flown, but it hasn't really dragged by, either. In lots of ways, I feel like I've been in law school forever. Actually, I feel like I've been specifically in this semester forever. Some people complained that it was going too quickly and that they couldn't believe it was already time for finals, but I was ready to get them over with and get on to the next one.
Although I've learned a lot and had many awesome experiences, this semester has been particularly busy, and I'm very tired. Oh, so very tired.
For our law school half time show, all I really have to contribute is my amazing ability to nap.
Any of you have anything better you want to submit for half time? (No wardrobe malfunctions, please, this is a family blog.)

Chariots of Fire, or How My Family Tried to Kill Me
The first in a series
of catching up
Lots of people like to tease their toddlers. Sure, it’s cute
to watch little people scream and cry, right?[1]
So we do it. It’s hilarious. I don’t know if it served some evolutionary
purpose, or if we just like their terrified little faces in response to mundane
things, but we do it.
That being said, we may be scarring the children in our
lives. In fact, I think that’s probably why my generation is messed up. But I
digress.
When I was a tiny child, my family had a favorite way to
cause this reaction in me. My family played the theme from Chariots of Fire.
Can you hear it in your head? Dum dum dum dum dum dum,
(chang chang) dum dum dum dum dum.
I would embed it here for you, but I don’t like it, so I
won’t. Google it yourselves. I’ll wait.
Ready?
So, this song made me panic and cry when my family would put
the CD in. (Dating myself, I suspect this was one of, if not the very first CD
my family owned. We were early adopters.)[2]
I don’t remember any of this. I still hate the song though.
I read a few books this summer that were non-law books, just
to give my brain a break from legal life. One of the books I read was about
music, as therapy, as connection between people, and as it interacts with the
brain, including some strange stories. For example, some people hear music
before they have a seizure. Some people have seizures caused by a particular
song.
Some of those seizures, although measurable in the brain,
manifest only by a general discomfort with the song that is playing.
Just saying.

Almost Half Way
Tomorrow morning (8:45 EST, if you're of the praying variety and want to think of me whilst I am in the midst of it) is my first final. Wednesday morning (same time) is my other final. I only have two this semester, so this is it.
I could not be less prepared.

Sick, Tired, and Busy
Well, I feel like I should post an update.
Hi.
This week, I'm done with classes, so I'm trying to study and get ready for my finals next week (Tuesday and Wednesday mornings).
Sadly, for the past few days, I've been sick. You can probably see my tonsils from wherever you live--they're HUGE! So I've been doing a lot more sleeping than I'd like, at a time like this, but I suppose you just do the best you can.
Also...I have company. Furry, small, annoying company.
More on that later.
Hope all is well for you all! And to those of you whom I KNOW had fun Thanksgivings and took many delightful pictures, I'd like to see a posting about that, please...
