Others gather people at their homes for the Superbowl.
Next year, I'll be hosting a State of the Union party. Put it on your calendars.
If you didn't catch it this year, you missed such gems as:
- President Obama cracking himself up with his own jokes
- Vice President Biden looking remarkably poised and appropriately interested, yet occasionally nodding or agreeing at the wrong parts
- House Speaker John Boehner's psychedelic tie
- Democrats jumping to their feet to applaud basically everything the President said
- Republicans refusing to applaud many harmless comments by the President
- President Obama proposing a freeze in domestic spending, and only VP Biden applauding
- The fact that SIX Supreme Court justices showed up for a stone-faced hour
- Some of those Justices looking a liiiiiiiiiitle bit sleepy
- Speaker Boehner and VP Biden joking together and shaking hands - nice to see a bit of civility, even just for a moment
- Ever so many members of Congress needing a bit of coaching as to what NOT to do when on national TV
- The choice of camera angles at specific parts of the speech. President Obama wants to talk about immigration? Quick! Cut to John McCain! That won't be awkward!
- Speaking of the camera, its amazing ability to find the people in the crowd who are completely not paying attention. I really am starting to believe that the camera operators might do it on purpose because, well, it's funny.
- Opportunity to watch the GOP response and spend some time feeling puzzled at how the text of the response could be published before a speech is even given. I mean, really, let's stop calling that a response.
- A sharply different tone than in past years - much more mellow, more respectful, more something that would be approved of by your elementary school teachers. I liked it.
My place. Next year. We'll laugh, we'll listen, we'll discuss form, we'll talk content, but mostly, we'll use the power of TiVo to back it up and watch the best gems again and again.
It will be no more or less nerdy than a Superbowl party. Less socially acceptable? Sure. But equally entertaining.

Oh, I wish I could have been there! Instead I was here, not watching it.
As for the Super Bowl, after Green Bay won the division championships, JC told me that meant they'd be in the Super Bowl. My response: Wasn't the Super Bowl, like, a month ago?
Little bit out of the sports loop here.......
I totally agree with all of the things you pointed out. I thought it was a little odd that we laughed so much during the whole thing. There were little funny and awkward moments all evening! However, overall, it was a good speech, and was received well. I'll definitely save the date for one exciting party next year! Can we eat delicious unhealthy food like they do at Superbowl parties?
OOhh I really like Emily's idea about delicious unhealthy food. I'm totally there. In fact, I think I might like your party better than the super bowl; it'll be shorter.
What a great recap! I felt like I was there! (which is good because my only other exposure to the SotU is from SNL...)
